FortisBC advanced gas meter exchanges are starting in the Town of Osoyoos on November 23 and will continue until March 2027 FortisBC’s Gas Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Project is upgrading gas meters to wireless advanced meters to modernize our metering technology and provide an enhanced customer experience.
Advanced meters will provide customers with additional benefits in the future, such as more information about their energy consumption and safety improvements. Upgrading to wireless meters also means we’ll no longer need to enter customers' properties for manual readings, in most cases.
More than one million FortisBC gas customers will have their current gas meters upgraded to digital wireless meters, or retrofitted so they communicate wirelessly, over the next few years through our Gas AMI Project.
Here’s what FortisBC gas customers need to know before the meter exchange:
- While most customers don’t need an appointment for the exchange in warmer months, we’re booking appointments in colder months to help minimize service interruptions – including home heating – for customers that require their gas to be turned off during the meter exchange.
- If the customer or another person aged 16 or older is home at the time of the meter exchange where service has been interrupted, we can relight gas appliances as soon as the work is complete, if required.
- In warmer months, if no one is home at the time of the exchange, the technician will leave information about who to contact to have gas appliances relit.
- In some cases, the meter can be exchanged without gas service disruption. We will still attempt to notify customers ahead of the exchange, even where no service disruption is anticipated.
- Customers need to ensure a clear path to the gas meter and unobstructed access at all times.
- We also ask customers to ensure clear access to gas appliances in case they require technicians to relight them after the meter exchange.
- A FortisBC employee or approved contractor will install the new meter. The meter exchange will take approximately one to two hours.
