The Town has been notified of recent incidents of collected hazardous materials that have posed significant risk to recycling staff. One incident involved a cannister of bear spray that deployed in a sorting facility causing harm to staff. As well, a recent fire in a collection vehicle is suspected to have been caused by a battery.
As a reminder, some common hazardous items include:
- Lithium-ion and household batteries
- Single-use propane and butane canisters
- Needles
- Flammable liquids
- Helium tanks
- Knives
- Flares
- Electronics
- Bear spray
- Ammunition
- Lighters
- Paint
